In this time of questioning what is politically correct, here is a rich visual version of the Wild West loaded with metaphor and irony, by off course, Kit Carson.
Much of Western American history has been reduced to romanticized books, films, curios and plastic toys. We are not told about the invasion of white immigrants, led by their Christian Manifest Destiny, bringing disease, murder and industrialization that brutally changed a cultural landscape forever.
The book, “Blood and Thunder” by Hampton Sides, lays out this history chronicling the life of Kit Carson, Scout.
“How the West was Wrong” is a pun of the 1962 film “How the West was Won”. Won from whom and at what cost is not addressed. Only that conquest is good and all ends well down a paved highway into a twinkling city.
Irony indeed...
